Interim Accessibility Guidelines for Indoor and Outdoor Spaces

This resource is a tool you can use to identify barriers in the built environment. It has audit worksheets that you can use to reflect on the accessibility of your building or outdoor site. The provincial accessibility standard for the built environment will replace the interim guidelines.

CSA/ASC B651:23 Accessible Design for the Built Environment Standard 
The newly updated standards released in 2023 contain the requirements for making the built environment accessible to people with disabilities. This version replaces the B651-18 and includes the following changes and updates:

  • updated dimensions
  • more notes to support user interpretation of requirements
  • detailed information on luminance contrast (colour contrast) and guidance on applying colour contrast
  • guidance for the position of tactile direction indicator
  • guidance for power-assisted doors
  • guidance on platform size for platform lifts that form part of a path of travel
  • recommendations for water bottle filling stations
  • guidance for water fountain controls 
  • guidance on how to address functional and cognitive barriers
