Here’s How To Participate

Proclamation Ceremony and the Mel Hebb Hourglass Action Awards Presentation

Date: May 27, 2024 | Time: 9:00-11:00 AM

This is a hybrid event, both in-person and online options are available. This event will have ASL interpreters, CART, and a sighted guide available for the event.

Kicking off Access Awareness Week Nova Scotia with a proclamation of the week from the Halifax Regional Municipality to showcase the importance of access awareness. After the proclamation will be the presentation of the Mel Hebb Hourglass Action Awards to celebrate the community leaders who have taken action toward increasing accessibility and improving the lives of people with disabilities.

Flag Raising at Province House

Date: May 27, 2024 | Time: 1:00 PM | Location: Province House, (1726 Hollis St., Halifax)

This is an in-person event outside of Province House. In case of poor weather, flag raising will be moved inside of Province House in the Red Room. ASL interpretation is available for this event. This event will be live-streamed.

Kick-off Access Awareness Week Nova Scotia with the flag raising at Province House and Provincial Government proclamation, including a performance by multi-disciplinary artist Vanessa Furlong of Legacy Circus.

Flag-raising will be live-streamed on the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission YouTube page.

Stumbling into Advocacy: Stories from Accidental Activists | Online Event

Date: May 29, 2024 | Time: 12:00 – 1:30 PM | Location: Online via Zoom Register for the Online Event, Stumbling into Advocacy: Stories from Accidental Activists. This event will have ASL interpreters and CART for the event.

Come and learn from the experiences of people with disabilities who didn’t choose to be activists, but must be, to live their life. They address gaps in our systems to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities in their community. This panel discussion is moderated by documentary filmmaker, writer and accessibility activist, Josh Dunn.

Scholarship Luncheon 

Date: May 31, 2024 | Time: 12:00 – 2:00 PM | Location: Atlantica Hotel, (1980 Robie St. at Quinpool, Halifax)

This is a hybrid event, both in-person and online options are available. This event will have ASL interpreters, CART, and a sighted guide available for the event. Celebrate the accomplishments of students with disabilities by joining our luncheon. This luncheon will be for the 2024 recipients of the scholarships for students with disabilities administered by the PAANS committee and presented by our sponsors.

Attend the pan-provincial Access Awareness Week Silent Disco virtually or in person on June 1, 2024, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Do you love live DJ events but like to dance to your own beat, and control your own volume? Come join us in person or virtually to attend the first-ever Access Awareness Silent Disco held in two Nova Scotia locations with live DJs and Silent Disco headsets to control your own volume and provide a choice of 3 music channels while enjoying an inclusive, accessible event for all ages.

A virtual option to attend in your own space or hold a community watch party to enjoy the event from anywhere is also available.

Sponsored by the Municipal Accessibility Support Program (AMANS) and the Accessibility Directorate (Province of Nova Scotia) this event brings technology and community together to create an accessible way to enjoy music and movement while spreading joy and access awareness everywhere!

There are three ways to participate:

  1. Live DJ Main Silent Disco Event
    In-person in Richmond County, Cape Breton
    Address: Louisdale Lions Club, 3128 Whiteside Rd, Louisdale, Richmond County
    Register for the Live DJ Main Silent Disco Event.

  2. Live DJ and Streaming of the Main Event
    In-person in West Hants where they will have a live DJ plus a big-screen streaming from Richmond’s event.
    Address: Windsor Community Centre, 78 Thomas St, Windsor
    Register for the West Hants’ Silent Disco Event.

  3. Join Virtually!
    You can participate in the Silent Disco by joining the live stream from the main Silent Disco event in Richmond.  You can join whether it is in the comfort of your own space or an activity with others. ASL Interpreters and CART will be available on the live stream via Zoom.
